atNorth, a major supplier of colocation, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence services in the Nordic region, has announced its expansion into Denmark with the opening of a brand new, state-of-the-art data center in Ballerup, which is located within Greater Copenhagen. After just a year of construction, the first phase will be ready for use in the fourth quarter of 2024.
This new location, which will be known as DEN01, will become atNorth's ninth data center and will highlight the company's presence in four of the five Nordic nations.
DEN01 will be able to provide 30MW of capacity for high performance tasks when it is completely constructed. It is situated on a large property, which would enable atNorth to scale efficiently in accordance with the requirements of its customers. Additionally, it will comply with the criteria set out by ISO27001 and ISO14001, and it will maintain a Tier 3 status.
The new data center location would reap the benefits of Denmark's mild climate as well as the country's strong links to the mainland of Europe. Additionally, the new location would be ideally positioned next to the waste and energy firm Vestforbraending, which now provides district heating to the equivalent of 70,000 homes. When it is finished, it will be able to make use of the technology at the data center that recycles heat, which has the ability to offer heat to thousands of people living in Ballerup.
Sustainable District Heating
The announcement of yet another big construction would be proof of atNorth's strong expansion plan, providing support for the company's objective to address the growing need for high-performance computing services that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
"Our data center locations are very carefully selected in order to adhere to our stringent requirements for scalability and energy efficiency," said Eyjólfur Magns Kristinsson, the CEO of atNorth. "Our data center locations are very carefully selected in order to adhere to our stringent requirements for scalability and energy efficiency. We are delighted to invest in Denmark's data center market and expand our facilities into the country at a time when the demand for high performance digital infrastructure is continually increasing."
According to Jesper Wurtzen, Mayor of Ballerup, "Ballerup is an attractive municipality to locate a business and atNorth is a great example of this. atNorth was established in Ballerup. It is quite exciting to think that in the future we may be able to utilize the surplus heat from the data center to generate sustainable district heating, and I am looking forward to keeping up with the project.”
According to Steen Neuchs Vedel, CEO of Vestforbrnding, "We work purposefully and continuously to utilize waste heat from organizations such as data centers and integrate them into our district heating network. Data centers produce a significant amount of waste heat that may be utilized. We are happy to be part of this project and look forward to working with atNorth to efficiently utilize waste heat from their new site to heat local homes."
