An ambitious plan to spend over $15 billion in Japan by 2027 has been revealed by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The goal of this large financial investment is to significantly increase its cloud hosting infrastructure to meet the region’s increasing cloud services demand. Tokyo and Osaka, two of Japan’s largest cities, will be the main focal points of the growth, with an emphasis on facility enhancement.
This new investment from AWS would demonstrate the company’s growing footprint in Japan and the strong customer demand in the area. The IT giant has already invested billions to increase the country’s cloud infrastructure capacity since 2011.
Generative AI services, which are a significant part of AWS’s offerings in Japan, are used by multiple big Japanese companies. These services are a component of AWS’s larger range of cloud solutions, which address different types of business requirements.
This major investment in Japan is being made at a time when the nation’s business sector and government are working together to make strides in artificial intelligence (AI). In a significant move that highlights this development, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has had talks with prominent players in the AI space, such as representatives of OpenAI and Nvidia. These discussions have focused on crucial topics including infrastructure and AI legislation, emphasizing the important role AI is going to play in Japan’s technological growth.
Cloud Infrastructure Investments in Japan and India
AWS is investing in Japan in a manner similar to its strategy in other significant regions, most notably India. To keep up with the rapidly increasing demand for cloud services, AWS promised in May of last year to spend $12.7 billion in India by 2030. After establishing two data infrastructure regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad between 2016 and 2022, AWS has now committed to investing a total of $16.4 billion in India.
The IT giant has invested in Japan in a manner consistent with this. AWS is now positioned for a large growth in the next years, having begun with the debut in Tokyo in 2011 and Osaka in 2021.
With cloud operations in 12 locations in this area now, including Hong Kong, Melbourne, Mumbai, Seoul, Sydney, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Ningxia, Jakarta, and Hyderabad, AWS has made significant strides in the Asia Pacific and China as part of its worldwide development plan.
