The most Azure-enabled iteration of SQL Server to date, with ongoing innovation in performance, security, and availability, has been made generally available by Microsoft. This is the most recent achievement in SQL Server’s more than 30-year history.
SQL Server users can now more easily derive deeper insights, predictions, and governance from their data at scale, thanks to SQL Server 2022’s connectivity to Azure which include Azure Synapse Link and Microsoft Purview. Database managers can manage their data estates with more freedom and no disruption to end users thanks to Azure integration's managed disaster recovery (DR) to Azure SQL Managed Instance and near real-time analytics.
Built-in query intelligence would automatically improve performance and scalability. Ledger for SQL Server, which uses blockchain to create a tamper-proof track record of time of all changes to the database, is the latest in security innovation.
The new connection capability in Azure SQL Managed Instance is completely integrated with SQL Server 2022 to guarantee uptime. With this new functionality, disaster recovery benefits from a PaaS environment, allowing you to set up and manage your backups more quickly than in an IaaS setting. This works by replicating data to a previously deployed Azure SQL Managed Instance serving as a DR replica site utilizing a built-in Distributed Availability Group (DAG).
According to Microsoft, there is no long configuration or maintenance needed because the instance is available whenever users would need it. In read scale-out scenarios, you may leverage this link capability to offload demanding queries that could otherwise impair database performance. More capabilities are being developed by us to facilitate online disaster recovery.
Azure Synapse Link for SQL
Previously, extract, transform, and load (ETL) had to be used to transfer data from on-premises databases like SQL Server to Synapse. An ETL pipeline’s setup and operation take time, and insights would frequently lag behind current events.Automatic change feeds are provided by Azure Synapse Link for SQL Server 2022 to gather changes inside SQL Server and feed them into Azure Synapse Analytics. With no impact on operational systems, Synapse Link would offer near real-time analysis and hybrid transactional and analytical processing. Once the data is in Synapse, users can integrate it with a variety of other data sources - regardless of their size, scale, or format - and perform advanced analytics on the combined data using Azure Machine Learning, Spark, or Power BI.
In SQL Server 2022, data transfer is substantially quicker while enabling for almost real-time insights since the automatic change feeds only push what is new or different, all with little to no influence on the performance of the source database.
Microsoft Purview Integration
Purview is a unified data governance and management service launched by Microsoft. It would give users the ability to break down data silos because SQL Server is also connected with Microsoft Purview for enhanced data discovery. Thanks to this integration, users would be able to:- Automatically collect metadata by running a free scan on a user’s on-premises SQL Server
- Sort data using sensitivity labels from Microsoft Information Protection, built-in classifiers, and custom classifiers
- Configure and manage certain SQL Server access privileges
- A unified picture of all SQL Servers installed in Azure and other clouds as well as on-premises
- Fully automated technical evaluation for SQL Server at no extra charge to assist users in maximizing the performance, scalability, security, business continuity, and other aspects of a database
- Utilize Microsoft Defender for Cloud to protect on-site data
- Secure identities with Azure Active Directory and single sign-on
- On-demand charging
