The Registry of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) and the Registry of the Dutch Internet Registration Authority (SIDN), respectively the domain name registries of the Canadian.CA domain and the Dutch.NL domain, have established a cooperation to develop, market, and maintain the existing CIRA Registry Platform together.
The code base and intellectual property of the product, which is known internally at CIRA as Fury, are going to be transferred to a business that is domiciled in Canada and is jointly owned and controlled by its shareholders.
Migrating .NL Domain
SIDN will be moving the.NL domain, which would represent the fourth biggest country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) in the world, to the new registry platform that will be jointly owned and developed as part of the agreement for mutual collaboration and development between the parties.
When the migration is finished, the.NL domain will be operating on a new cloud-based version of the existing CIRA Registry Platform. This new version would have all of the capabilities and features that SIDN needs in order to properly operate the registry.
‘Future-Ready Registry Platform’
The new partnership between two of the world’s leading ccTLDs would solidify the CIRA Registry Platform as among the best in the industry. According to the organizations themselves, CIRA and SIDN are organizations that are comparable in many respects, with beliefs, interests, and aims that are complimentary to one another. This would serve both Canada and the Netherlands well as they begin on their new relationship, which might benefit both countries.
In the years to come, SIDN and CIRA plan to work together to create additional features for the upgraded platform, integrate new technologies, and extend the market potential available for using the platform. SIDN and CIRA are convinced that the platform's industry position will be solidified as a result of the bundling of knowledge, development capacity, and investment strength.
Substitution of DRS5
Following a comprehensive investigation into the potential successor to SIDN's existing registry platform, DRS5, it was concluded that the most effective strategy would be to build a partnership with an existing registry - to develop a new system in tandem with that registry. CIRA was selected as the winner due to the market-leading technology it has, the internal knowledge it possesses, and the shared values it would possess. Both organizations also have a well-established history of collaboration to advance innovation and the values of the open Internet.
The “combined power” of SIDN and CIRA would enable quicker development, shared resources, cheaper costs, and shared risk for both organizations, which would ensure the continued expansion and security of both.CA and.NL in the years to come. Because of this, registrants, and domain name registrars of.CA and.NL domains would get tangible advantages, since the underlying technology will become more robust and resilient.
