Cloudflare has unveiled Cloudflare D1, a serverless database that would simple and instant to use. With only a few clicks, developers will be able to start building database-backed apps with Cloudflare Workers. Data will be kept near to its user. It would allow for lightning-fast performance without the hassles of setting up and maintaining a traditional database.
Today we’re announcing our first serverless database which we expect will quickly become one of the largest databases in the world,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare.
Databases are used to store data in anything from mobile apps to business SaaS systems and frameworks like Ruby on Rails. And SQL is the most widely used language for querying and updating databases of all sizes.
Cloudflare’s D1 will provide Cloudflare Workers direct access to SQLite, one of the most extensively used database systems in the world. Developers can create database-backed apps without ever having to worry about deploying or managing a database by combining Cloudflare’s serverless development platform with instant databases.
“The hardest part about serverless isn’t actually the code, it’s the storage. Today we’re announcing our first serverless database which we expect will quickly become one of the largest databases in the world,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “Cloudflare D1 is built on Cloudflare’s global network, which we believe will allow us to offer one of the largest and most performant serverless databases on the market so no business needs to be bogged down by the cost and complexity of managing their storage.”
SQLite API
Cloudflare D1 will employ Cloudflare’s worldwide network (CDN) to improve a company’s database by placing it as close to its clients as possible, giving them the best possible experience. Cloudflare is also improving the developer experience for creating full stack apps by combining storage options with its serverless computing platform. The SQLite API, one of the most prominent and widely used APIs in the world, will be compatible with Cloudflare D1.With Cloudflare D1, developers would be able to:
- Intelligently locate data wherever your users are - There is no need to select a region using Cloudflare D1. Instead, Cloudflare will store your database automatically wherever your users are, resulting in lightning-fast speed.
- Easily spin up a database with Cloudflare Workers - Create a Cloudflare Worker and spin up a database in a few clicks instead of figuring out sophisticated databases.
- Import data from other providers to Cloudflare - Developers will be able to smoothly migrate data from different database providers using Cloudflare D1.
- Unlock the power and scale of Cloudflare Workers within their applications - Cloudflare D1 is completely integrated with Cloudflare Workers, making it exceedingly simple to develop full stack apps.
- Slash their data transfer fee – Cloudflare’s objective is to offer Cloudflare D1 the most affordable alternative for developers looking for a simple and secure database. As a result, Cloudflare would not charge data transfer costs, making it simple for developers to move data between services.
