GitLab, the industry-leading enterprise DevSecOps platform, has announced the release of GitLab 16, its most recent significant update. GitLab 16 introduces a vast array of new capabilities in security, compliance, AI/ML, and value stream analytics, allowing customers to release software more quickly and efficiently.

GitLab 16’s AI-powered features include Code Suggestions, which helps users write code more swiftly and effectively. In addition, it provides security testing and analysis, observability, proactive vulnerability detection, and additional features such as Suggested Reviewers, Explain This Code, Explain This Vulnerability, and Value Stream Forecasting. Future features, including Refactor This Code and Resolve This Vulnerability, will further enhance the platform's AI-powered capabilities.

The security of the software supply chain is an integral component of GitLab’s offerings. Enterprises can establish a balance between efficiency and security with automation and end-to-end software supply chain security. GitLab would enable organizations to accelerate the delivery of secure software by establishing policies, gaining visibility into the threat landscape, and ensuring compliance adherence. GitLab 16 introduces new and enhanced security capabilities, such as centralized policy administration, expanded compliance reports and controls, compliance dashboards, and SLSA Level 3 attestations by default.

GitLab will launch GitLab Dedicated, a single-tenant software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution, to address the complex compliance and regulatory demands of highly regulated industries and organizations with stringent requirements. This solution concentrates on data residency, isolation, and private networking to deliver an enterprise-grade DevSecOps platform to its customers.

GitLab 16’s Value Stream Management feature would enable customers to visualize and manage end-to-end DevSecOps workstreams. Value Stream Analytics enables businesses to obtain insight into their DevSecOps workflow, from conception to delivery. The Value Stream Dashboard displays metrics such as cycle durations, critical vulnerabilities, deployment frequency, and DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) metrics across the enterprise.

GitLab’s decision to integrate AI into DevSecOps workflows would align with industry demand and organizations’ desire to rapidly deliver secure software. According to GitLab’s seventh annual Global DevSecOps Report, 65% of developers are currently employing or plan to employ artificial intelligence and machine learning in their testing efforts within the next three years. The report also highlights security, efficiency, and automation as the leading advantages of a DevSecOps platform.

Mark Portofe, Director of Platform Engineering at CARFAX, highlighted the positive impact of GitLab’s DevSecOps platform on software delivery, citing a 33% decrease in vulnerabilities in less than a year and a 20% increase in deployments year-over-year.
