A 34 megawatt peak (MWp) power purchase agreement (PPA) has been struck between Stadtwerke Göttingen AG and maincubes, a European operator of colocation data centers. For 10 years, pure solar electricity will be supplied to maincubes under the terms of the PPA agreement.
As part of maincubes’ sustainability plan, the solar electricity deal would mark a significant achievement for the colocation provider from Germany. The solar power is generated by facilities located south of Göttingen in Germany. After implementing a sustainability plan in 2013, Stadtwerke Göttingen was recognized as a “Top Local Supplier” for the ninth consecutive year in 2024. According to maincubes, in the area, the utility firm is trusted as a reliably power supply partner.
“The conclusion of our first PPA contract is a milestone that we are proud of,” said maincubes CTO and co-founder, Albrecht Kraas. “With this project, we are setting the framework for our future sustainability standards and proving once again that we are determined to further optimize the environmentally friendly energy supply for our data centers.”
Sustainable Data Center Operations
“The conclusion of our first PPA contract is a milestone that we are proud of,” said maincubes CTO and co-founder, Albrecht Kraas. maincubes claims to employ an innovative approach to sustainability for its colocation data centers, marked by a multitude of methods. The primary indicator of maincubes’ environmental commitment to the outside world is its EMAS registration (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme). Simultaneously, maincubes claims to place a high premium on adapting the infrastructural environment flexibly to meet client needs. Their third data center in the Rhine-Main area (FRA03) is also proposed to be situated in this context. Furthermore, maincubes is actively pursuing the extension of its PPA contracts and is in-depth in discussions and negotiations with additional providers of renewable energy.
The fact that maincubes promotes ecologically friendly initiatives like the installation of wind turbines in India and the use of hydropower in the Netherlands would show that sustainability is not simply a goal for the company, but a key element of its business strategy. The colocation provider also actively participates in the Open Compute Foundation, a network of server, telecom, and data center providers that fosters innovation and environmentally friendly product development.
