Oracle and Microsoft have unveiled Oracle Database@Azure, bolstering their cloud-based partnership. This service offers customers a direct line to Oracle database services operating on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), all within the confines of Microsoft Azure’s data centers.
This synergy between Oracle and Microsoft brings to the table a blend of Oracle's renowned database performance on OCI and Azure's best-in-class services, notably its flagship offering, Azure OpenAI. For businesses worldwide, this would spell increased agility when choosing where to run their workloads, alongside a streamlined cloud acquisition and management process.
Oracle Database@Azure's introduction aims to speed up the migration of businesses to the cloud, tapping into Azure's vast infrastructure, tools, and services. The partnership would promise the following:
- More avenues for transitioning Oracle databases to cloud platforms
- Unmatched Oracle database performance
- An integrated, low-latency operating environment in Azure
- Tools for crafting cloud-native applications, accentuated by Azure’s AI services
- A cloud architecture with the backing of two cloud juggernauts
Satya Nadella, Microsoft's CEO, emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration. He remarked, "With Oracle joining forces with us, Microsoft Azure becomes the solitary other cloud platform hosting Oracle’s database services. This sets the stage for a fresh wave of cloud-driven breakthroughs."
Oracle's CTO, Larry Ellison, echoed this sentiment, shedding light on the multi-cloud trend. "Given that many are already juggling multiple cloud services, our partnership with Microsoft ensures that Azure and the latest Oracle Database technology mesh seamlessly."
Multi-Cloud
A multicloud solution crafted with the customer in mind, this new service would amalgamate Oracle and Microsoft's capabilities directly in the Azure portal, ironing out issues like disconnected management and a convoluted acquisition process.
Customers can now house their Azure services and fully managed Oracle Database services within one data center, complete with support for a slew of Oracle's offerings. This integration is cemented with a mutual support model, ensuring minimal downtime for mission-critical workloads.
Oracle and Microsoft have also optimized the procurement process. Customers can acquire Oracle Database@Azure through Azure Marketplace and benefit from existing Azure and Oracle agreements.
Mihir Shah of Fidelity Investments commented on this development, highlighting the pivotal role of interoperability in delivering robust financial transactions. Similarly, PepsiCo's Magesh Bagavathi emphasized the strategic edge this partnership offers in analyzing vast amounts of data.
Other global giants, including Vodafone and Voya Financial, echoed these sentiments, signaling a warm reception in the B2B sector.
Oracle will spearhead the management and operation of these OCI services within Microsoft’s data centers, with an initial focus on North American and European regions.
