Modine Buys Liquid Immersion Cooling Technology for Data Centers

The intellectual property and other specific assets of TMG Core, a leader in single- and two-phase liquid immersion cooling technology for data centers with high-density computing requirements, have been acquired by Modine (NYSE: MOD), a diversified global provider of innovative thermal management solutions.

As data center heat loads increase, the investment would strengthen Modine’s position as a supplier of comprehensive cooling solutions by adding single- and two-phase immersion cooling technologies to its offering.

Single-phase immersion cooling involves submerging electronic components in a non-conductive liquid that does not change state. The heat generated by the components is transferred to the liquid, which is circulated and cooled using a heat exchanger. This method is efficient and simpler to maintain due to the liquid’s constant state.

Two-phase immersion cooling, on the other hand, uses a liquid that changes state (from liquid to gas) upon absorbing heat from the components. As the liquid vaporizes, it would remove heat effectively. The vapor then condenses back to a liquid upon cooling, creating a cycle. This method can achieve higher heat transfer efficiency but is more complex due to the phase change process and the need for condensation management.

“Modine’s investment in liquid immersion cooling technology advances our strategy to expand our global data center product offering and capture market opportunities that help us achieve our long-term growth targets,” said Neil Brinker, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Modine. “This investment strengthens Modine’s position in the rapidly growing data center market, providing our customers with advanced solutions to support high-density, accelerated computing applications, such as generative artificial intelligence, 5G and machine learning.”

The Airedale Brand

With this investment, Modine would be positioned to gain market share in the quickly expanding data center liquid cooling industry, which is expected to reach $7.8 billion by 2028 according to analysts. IT servers are immersed in tanks full of non-conductive fluid to absorb the heat produced by the IT load using liquid immersion cooling. This procedure would allow for lower energy and water usage, more computation density in a sealed environment, and the possibility of heat recovery. Applications for edge data centers, like autonomous cars, where data processing has to be done closer to the source to minimize latency, would benefit from liquid immersion cooling as well.

Modine’s investment in liquid immersion cooling technology expands the innovative solutions our Airedale brand can offer throughout the thermal chain, allowing us to cover air, liquid and hybrid systems,” said Eric McGinnis, President, Modine Climate Solutions. “Our customers lean on us to help them solve the heat problem in next-generation, mission-critical IT applications where they need to maximize processing efficiency while complying with increasingly strict emissions and energy efficiency requirements. We look forward to working with our key customers and partners in this increasingly critical area, supplying complete systems with intuitive controls that are manufactured and supported globally.”
