A new report has revealed that there is an increasing demand for Java productivity solutions among developers. According to the 2023 Java Developer Efficiency Report by Perforce Software, 50% of respondents reported longer startup times for microservice applications in the 11th annual JRebel poll.
The report aims to list the best Java ecosystem support tools and technologies while also analyzing new trends and how they affect total worker efficiency. It highlights the constant impact of microservices on Java application build and restart durations as one of its key findings. The use of microservices continues to expand within the Java community, with larger businesses using over 21 microservices per program. However, the most frequent reconfiguration time in 2023 was found to be 10+ minutes, up 6% from 2022, indicating that Java developers continue to deal with lengthy reload periods throughout their apps.
Rod Cope, CTO at Perforce Software, noted that this year’s report highlights the necessity of improving the productivity of Java developer teams, coinciding with the rising demand for software developers in 2023. As organizations will need to further invest in their developers to help them deal with DevOps at scale, they will face more pressure to accelerate time-to-market.
Microservice Application Redeployment and Start-Up Times
Curtis Johnson, Product Manager at JRebel by Perforce, said that many companies are still experiencing longer start-up times for their microservices applications.
The report also evaluated the rising annoyance with microservice application redeployment and start-up times. 17% of respondents reported start-up periods that had increased by more than 50%, compared to last year's findings. Larger businesses continue to experience longer reassignment times, with 65% reporting periods of more than five minutes per transfer.
