A major player in the hyperscale data center industry, Scala Data Centers, has announced the opening of its first facility in the Brazilian Southern Region, a move that will undoubtedly further improve Latin America’s technological environment. The SPOAPA01 data center, which is located in Porto Alegre, is a significant turning point in the business’s growth and highlights its dedication to effective and sustainable data solutions.

The SPOAPA01 facility, a part of the ‘HyperEdge’ family, would emerge as a powerhouse with a 4.8MW IT capacity. Its configuration is carefully designed to meet the growing needs of distributed computing and connectivity. This development would aligns with Scala’s focus on serving Hyperscale customers - entities that necessitate infrastructures capable of managing vast volumes of data and processing, with a high degree of scalability.

This data center in the state of Rio Grande do Sul was made possible by a R$ 240 million investment. The site was chosen strategically because to its geographic importance as well as its close proximity to Salgado Filho International Airport and the Navegantes area. The 4th District, as it is often called, is regarded as Rio Grande do Sul's core of innovation and technology, according to Scala.

SPOAPA01 would bring the advantages of a highly connected data center environment since it is situated adjacent to existing legacy data centers. The data center is in a prime location because of its close proximity to the Malbec System, an underwater cable that will eventually include a branch from Porto Alegre to Buenos Aires. Customers of Scala stand to gain a great deal from this strategic positioning, especially in terms of low-latency connectivity with the Argentine market, stated Scala.

The choice of the Porto Alegre location was not just based on its proximity to older data centers. A direct connection from Porto Alegre to Buenos Aires is the goal of the upcoming 1,550-mile Malbec undersea cable branch, which connects key cities like as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires.

The CEO and co-founder of Scala Data Centers, Marcos Peigo, expressed excitement about the new facility's worldwide standard compliance and strategic position, stating that it provides a strong option to the region's market and supports neighboring Argentina.

FastDeploy Approach

“With this site now in operation, our customers finally have the alternative of a global standard data center to serve the region’s growing market, including support for the Buenos Aires region, in Argentina,” said Marcos Peigo, CEO and Co-Founder of Scala.Operating only on certified renewable energy, the SPOAPA01 data center would demonstrate Scala's dedication to sustainability. Because of its closed-circuit and air cooling systems, its design claims remarkable resource efficiency, running with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.4 and a Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of zero.

Scala's patented design and construction process, the FastDeploy approach, was used throughout the development of the facility. Compared to conventional models, this method drastically cuts deployment time by up to 50% by using prefabricated and transportable modular components. Hyperscale clients would benefit from an efficient experience thanks to this creative approach.

Scala's Center of Excellence in Engineering (CoE), a group of more than 400 engineers, architects, and data center experts from Latin America, led the project. By ensuring quick and effective delivery to clients, the CoE's engagement would achieve improvements in size, energy efficiency, project visibility, and control.

With four more locations opening in 2023, Scala's portfolio already consists of nine operating data centers spread across Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. The business is expanding quickly; it now has projects underway in Colombia, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. More than R$ 8 billion has been invested by Scala in its Latin American initiatives since its founding in 2020. The company's long-term goal is to reach 500MW of dispersed capacity throughout four countries in five years.

In addition to being a significant advancement in Latin America's technical infrastructure, Scala Data Centers' development and investment in efficient, sustainable data center solutions would also mirror a rising worldwide trend towards more scalable, ecologically friendly data solutions. Scala is poised to have a substantial impact on the digital transformation environment by leading the way in enabling the future of data management and communication in the area with this initiative.
