With a single Edge server using about 1,120 watts and achieving 1.17 Gbps per Watt, Varnish Software, a provider of web caching, video streaming, and content delivery software solutions, in partnership with Intel and Supermicro, has announced new, record-setting content delivery (CDN) performance milestones. The joint approach would enable the live event business and content distribution platforms to sustainably and economically support large-scale live broadcast events.
“The collaboration with Intel and Varnish Software is an example of how we are working closely with best-in-class technology partners,” said Michael McNerney, Vice President, Marketing and Network Security, Supermicro.
“Achieving over 1 Tbps in a single Edge server is a major leap forward for the industry, and critical for delivering the next generation of video and digital experiences,” said Frank Miller Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Varnish Software. “The need to deliver more throughput with less energy and at the lowest cost is growing exponentially. With commercially available software and off-the-shelf server hardware from Supermicro - built on 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors - we have entered a new era of CDN cache performance. Varnish Software’s unique architecture, features and capabilities were essential in reaching the new benchmarks, which include asynchronous direct I/O, NUMA awareness and software-based TLS.”
Without the need for dedicated, extra-expensive SSL payload devices, the measurements were completed using Varnish Enterprise 6.0 installed on a Supermicro 2U CloudDC server fueled by 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPUs. The CloudDC server series from Supermicro is an architecture that has been designed for both private and public servers and is available in 1U and 2U form factors with single or dual CPU setups. To provide the greatest effectiveness, these servers have been balanced in terms of CPU, RAM, storage, extension, and networking. Each of these servers has a number of PCI-Express (PCIe) Gen 5 x8 and x16 ports for the newest PCIe devices, allowing for growth.
Video Streaming, CDNs
“We deliver first-to-market innovations and IT Solutions that are environmentally friendly and fit every organization’s objectives and budget,” said Michael McNerney, Vice President, Marketing and Network Security, Supermicro. “The collaboration with Intel and Varnish Software is an example of how we are working closely with best-in-class technology partners to deliver the latest generation of cutting-edge solutions, specifically in the video streaming and CDN space.”Crucially, based on client needs, the performance and energy savings obtained with this standard can be applied to a wide variety of computers. With the help of cost-effective system sizes and energy economy, Varnish Software would look forward to collaborating with key allies Intel and Supermicro on systems that support a variety of video and content distribution tasks.
Varnish Software has its offices located in Los Angeles, New York City, London, Tokyo, Singapore, Stockholm, Oslo, Karlstad, Düsseldorf and Paris. Those who are interested in learning more about Varnish’s achievements can get in touch with Varnish or arrange a visit while they are in Barcelona for the MWC from February 27 to March 2, 2023.
