Global cloud storage business Wasabi Technologies has acquired Curio AI from GrayMeta. The agreement’s financial terms were kept a secret. Both the intellectual property and the creative team behind Curio - among them, CEO of GrayMeta Aaron Edell, who will become Senior Vice President of AI and Machine Learning at Wasabi - are included in the deal.
Wasabi intends to launch a new class of AI-powered intelligent storage for the media and entertainment sector in the spring of 2024, including this Curio AI technology.
Wasabi-stored video is indexed second-by-second by Curio AI. Wasabi Technologies CEO David Friend compared a video repository without comprehensive metadata to a library without a card catalog. “AI can help with this. AI can recognize things, people, brands, and even individual voices. Without it, it takes a lot of manual labor and time to discover the precise portions you're searching for. We can transform media storage thanks to the purchase of Curio AI.”
Video is one of the biggest opportunities in the storage industry, stated Wasabi. On outdated tape systems, there are hundreds of exabytes of video archives, and every year, a large amount of fresh exabytes are created from cinema, television, sports, news, advertising, business communications, and countless hours of priceless raw material and outtakes. Finding the exact video parts you need at any given time can be very time-consuming and wasteful if the metadata isn't searchable.
With Curio AI, editors and producers can rapidly search and retrieve particular video segments based on persons, locations, events, emotions, logos, landmarks, background sounds, and more.
AI-powered Intelligent Cloud Storage
With Curio AI, editors and producers can rapidly search and retrieve particular video segments based on persons, locations, events, emotions, logos, landmarks, background sounds, and more. Curio AI is an intelligent data platform that employs AI to provide rich metadata for media collections. Additionally, Curio AI can recognize and record voice in more than 50 spoken languages. Users would gain from experiences that are more tailored to them in very exact detail, which enables businesses to get relevant material to market quickly.
Customers like Liverpool Football Club for example would get access to the information they need to handle vast amounts of digital files at breakneck speed thanks to Wasabi's Curio AI-powered storage.
“Wasabi customers will be able to unlock the value in their archives and quickly locate the exact thing they need among millions of hours of footage thanks to AI-powered storage,” said Aaron Edell, the new Senior Vice President of AI and Machine Learning at Wasabi Technologies. “We think this will be the most significant advancement in the storage industry since the invention of object storage. I am excited to collaborate with Dave and the outstanding group he has assembled to create a fresh chapter in the media and entertainment sector.”
“Wasabi is on a trajectory that few others in the industry can claim. The advantage of being a hyper-focused company is that we can lead the industry in terms of price, performance, reliability, and innovation. With the acquisition of Curio AI, we are now set to introduce the industry’s first AI-powered intelligent cloud storage,” added David Friend. “Like Wasabi’s standard cloud storage, our Curio AI-powered storage will be simple, fast, reliable, and inexpensive. With the acquisition of Curio AI, our customers will not only be able to store data but locate and instantly retrieve exactly what they want.”
