LCL Expands Brussels Data Center Presence with €30M Investment

Data center specialist LCL is further expanding LCL Brussels-North, one of the region’s most connected data center campuses. LCL hopes to sustainably assist the expanding digital economy in the Brussels area in this manner. A total of €30 million has been invested. The Tier III data center’s design has already received certification from the esteemed Uptime Institute.

LCL already possesses four colocation data centers in Diegem, in the Brussels region. It is anticipated that during the next two years, a fifth data center will be added.

This extra data center area was particularly selected by LCL Data Centers for integration into its existing data center facility located in Diegem. In the beginning, the brand-new data center will not yet have all of its components installed. The LCL is acting in this manner on purpose. By doing so, the data center company is able to quickly transition in order to serve a new customer that is tailored to the latter’s particular requirements. This development strategy would be consistent with the customer intimacy strategy that LCL has chosen to implement.

Laurens van Reijen, Managing Director of LCL Data Centers, explains, “LCL Brussels-North is the most connected data center complex in the region because it is the hub through which all of Belgium’s data traffic passes. We can actually see it as the heart of the digital economy. With this additional data center, we want to continue to support the growing digitalization of society.”

Thanks to the €30 million investment, LCL can attract additional customers who will be able to host their IT infrastructure in LCL Brussels-North. Currently, some customers have already reserved racks within this new data center, according to LCL.

Tier III Design Certificate

A Tier III certificate has already been granted by the Uptime Institute to the design of the new data center in Diegem. In order to accomplish this, the complete design, including all calculations, was examined to see whether or not it complied with the Tier III requirements defined by the Uptime Institute. The pioneering role that LCL has played in the data center industry is reaffirmed by the company in the field of sustainability efforts.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to advance and acquire more computational computing capacity, particularly the infrastructure or cloud resources that are necessary for AI, there is an increasing demand for space in data centers, stated LCL. Since computing infrastructure is now consuming quite some energy, LCL is always considering sustainable solutions. One way the data center company is doing this is by revamping its cooling systems, and considering alternative ways of cooling to further reduce its data centers’ CO2 emissions.

Currently, LCL cools its data center spaces using air, but this will eventually no longer be sufficient, according to the data center company. LCL is therefore looking at the possibility of implementing ‘liquid cooling’ to achieve higher energy efficiency. Furthermore, LCL is actively engaged in the field of heat recovery, which is another challenge that it faces.

“Our ambition remains the same: to become the largest data center company in Belgium,” added Mr. Van Reijen. “In doing so, we only want to grow in a sustainable way. Furthermore, we continue to opt for a customer intimacy strategy. That way we can perpetuate our growth.”
